PERSONAL STATEMENT

As mentioned in my earlier personal statements I still wish to be an independent artist, whilst achieving an understanding of what I am doing creatively. To realize this I will have to look back at what I have done so far.

At the moment it seems that I have been operating on a level that is perhaps more superficial than I would like and that is the result of my accident/disability where I am in survival mode. I feel that I need to look deeper, and this means that I must allow myself to be free of my protective layer of apparent confidence and flippancy and make myself vulnerable.

The source I find myself going back to is music and its emotional impact. I hope that in some way I have been able to tune into something similar in my paintings.

There are some artists who appear to have been working along the same lines, e.g. Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, though they may seem to be ‘old hat’ it is an area that I feel is worth further study, at least for me. At present I feel I have reached an ‘area of uncertainty’ which might be productive. It is not very pleasant, but allows me to look into what I am doing with greater depth, rather than reacting or acting intuitively.

My main talents lie in being a fairly able painter – sometimes I think I’m a genius, but more often I think I am but ‘fortunes fool’.

At last I have been able to build up a reasonable body of work that might be enough for an exhibition. All that is required is the confidence to arrange it.
